Understanding Religious Trauma Therapy in Utah
Purple Sky Counseling provides specialized therapy for religious trauma and faith transitions across Utah, both in person at our eight offices and online statewide. Our trauma-informed, EMDR-trained clinicians help you process harmful religious experiences, navigate a changing faith, and rebuild a sense of self without judgment, at your own pace.
What is religious trauma?
Religious trauma is the lasting emotional, psychological, and sometimes physical distress that can follow harmful experiences within a religious community, belief system, or upbringing. It can come from teachings rooted in fear or shame, rigid control, the loss of community after leaving a faith, or experiences of spiritual abuse. It's a real and recognized form of trauma. And it's treatable.
You don't have to have left your faith to experience it, and you don't have to be sure about what you believe to start healing.
Signs you might be experiencing religious trauma
Everyone's experience is different, but common signs include:
Anxiety, guilt, or shame tied to religious teachings or "not being enough"
Difficulty trusting yourself or making decisions without external rules
Fear, panic, or intrusive thoughts about punishment, hell, or judgment
Grief or isolation after leaving or questioning a faith community
Strained family relationships around belief or leaving
Difficulty with identity, sexuality, or autonomy after a high-control upbringing
Feeling "frozen," numb, or disconnected when religion comes up
Truly, this is something that many of us have gone through or have helped other people go through.
How we help with religious trauma and faith transitions
At Purple Sky, religious-trauma and faith-transition work is one of our core specialties, not an afterthought. Our approach is:
Trauma-informed and non-judgmental. We don't push you toward or away from any belief. Your values and pace lead the work.
Evidence-based. We use approaches like EMDR (we're one of Utah's leading EMDR teams), parts work, and CBT to help your nervous system and mind process painful experiences.
Affirming. We know that who you decide to be or already are is incredible; we will support all of you. We provide LGBTQIA+ and neuro-affirming care and support for identity, autonomy, and rebuilding self-trust.
Whole-person. Therapy and, when helpful, psychiatric medication management are available under one roof. You can explore identity, behaviors, existential crisis, or even spirituality with your therapist
Our trauma and EMDR work is led by Cassidy DuHadway, LCSW, founder of Purple Sky Counseling, an EMDRIA-Approved EMDR Trainer, and author of Becoming Me: Unraveling and Healing the Sacred Wounds of Religious Trauma— a memoir and guide for healing from religious trauma.
What does faith-transition therapy look like?
Faith transitions, including questioning, shifting, or leaving a religious tradition, can bring grief, relief, fear, and freedom all at once, often alongside family and community strain. Therapy gives you a confidential space to sort through what you actually believe and want, process loss, set boundaries, and steady relationships, without anyone telling you what the "right" outcome is.

Frequently Asked Questions About Religious Trauma
Is religious trauma a real diagnosis?
"Religious trauma" isn't a standalone DSM diagnosis, but the distress it causes is real and is recognized by mental health professionals. Symptoms often overlap with anxiety, depression, and PTSD, and respond well to trauma-focused therapy.
Do I have to leave my religion to get help?
No. We support people who are questioning, staying, leaving, or simply hurting, and we don't push any outcome. Our role is to help you heal and decide what's right for you.
Will my therapist judge me for my beliefs (or for leaving)?
No. Our care is non-judgmental and affirming. Wherever you are with faith is welcome here.
Can therapy help with the family conflict around leaving a faith?
Yes. We help with boundaries, communication, grief, and navigating relationships during and after a faith transition.
Do you offer this online?
Yes, absolutely. Secure online therapy is available to anyone physically located in Utah, at the same rates as in person.
