What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT, is a practical, skills-based approach designed to help people manage overwhelming emotions, improve relationships, and build a life that feels more stable and workable.

DBT combines tools from cognitive behavioral therapy with mindfulness and acceptance-based practices. It can be especially helpful if emotions tend to feel intense, stress is difficult to manage, or you find yourself getting pulled into patterns that are hard to interrupt.

The word dialectical refers to the idea that two things can be true at the same time. You can be doing the best you can and still want things to change. DBT helps you practice holding both acceptance and change as you build new ways of responding.

What you’ll learn

DBT focuses on four core skill areas:

Mindfulness

Learn how to stay present, notice what is happening without immediately reacting, and bring more awareness to your thoughts, emotions, and surroundings.

Emotion regulation

Build a better understanding of your emotions and learn practical ways to respond when they feel intense or difficult to manage.

Distress tolerance

Develop skills for getting through stressful or crisis moments without making the situation harder.

Interpersonal effectiveness

Practice communicating more clearly, setting boundaries, asking for what you need, and navigating relationships more effectively.

Who this group may be helpful for

This group may be a good fit if you are dealing with things like:

  • Intense or quickly changing emotions

  • Anxiety or overwhelming stress

  • Impulsive reactions or behaviors

  • Difficulty coping when things feel unbearable

  • Relationship conflict or communication difficulties

  • Trouble setting or maintaining boundaries

  • Feeling stuck in patterns you want to change

What to expect

This is a structured, clinician-led skills group. Sessions focus on learning and practicing DBT tools that you can begin using outside of group in everyday situations.

You do not need to have everything figured out before you begin. The goal is to give you practical skills, space to practice them, and support as you learn what works for you.
